History
"Fédération Internationale des Associations de Thanatoloques" (FIAT) - International Federation of Thanatologists Associations" (IFTA).

The Federation was founded by A.F. Chatillon (1914-1977) in 1970. The Federation is located at 14 Avenue Pasteur, Monte Carlo, Principality of Monaco. However this is only the official location for the constitution. The administrative offices are at this moment located in Hilversum, Melkpad 21a, The Netherlands. The Federation communicates officially in three languages: French, English and Spanish.

The idea of founding FIAT-IFTA, originated in the fall of 1969, near Paris. Originally there were three inspirators, André F. Chatillon, Robert Lepine and Jacques Marette. On April 24th, FIAT-IFTA was erected in Monaco with: President André Chatillon first vice Presidente R. Lepine; second vice Presidente J. Collaer Secretary Jacques Marette and treasurer E. Aubert.

The objective then was merely to promote, world wide, "the preservation care through thanatological / embalming practices".

In 1974 FIAT-IFTA changed into a federation of funerary services in general.

In 1988 FIAT-IFTA "became what it is until today- three large sectors covering the whole world:
- the West, i.e. North and South America
- the Centre, covering Europe and Africa
- the East, covering Asia and Australasia / Oceania

Every two years, the General Assemblee meets. At the same time, recently, International conferences have taken place. This attracts a lot of members from all over the world. The attendees are presented with a programme of interest and normally attend funeral homes, cemeteries etc. in the country that organizes the conference. The members of the board have their boardmeeting and all members can attend the General Assemblee. There is also ample opportunity to meet each other and for discussion.

The 9th International Conference will be held in London (UK), June 2 to 4, 2006.

The meetings before were held in:
2004 Berlin
2002 Kyoto
2000 Toronto
1998 Barcelona
1996 Amsterdam
1994 Nashville
1992 Barcelona
1990 Nice

The federation publishes every four months, a magazine called Thanos. It includes information and interesting articles from members worldwide on matters concerning the funeral industry, successes and problems that occur. This is published in three languages, French, English and Spanish. If you have any interesting contributions please get in touch with the secretariat.
