In our discussions with embalmers one of the major issues appears to be the registration of products under the EU Biocides Directive.
Every product used as a biocide has to be registered and this includes formaldehyde based products. It also includes any other chemical used for this process which has a biocidal activity. It's important to deal with the facts and the facts only and I have posted a link under the heading 'EU Biocides Directive' for everyone to see.
It's also important to note that if a company promotes a product that is fomaldehyde free that does not mean that it should not be registered and indeed some of the ingredients in the formulation may require users to take care.
Some of the alternatives contain such chemicals as phenol or methanol and these chemicals are also toxic and harmful and it is important that embalmers don't change from one fluid to the other without all of the information.
We have no commercial interest in the marketing or sales of embalming fluids but we will advise if asked and we can explain the health and safety implications on using any formulation.
